Baljit is the MD of a regional and specialist recruitment consultancy. She has three additional staff. She is extremely hands-on with the business and spends as much time on the phone with clients as her other staff. This doesn't leave a great deal of time left for other business related duties and therefore these often get completed on a needs-must basis and often in the evening or at weekends. The business doesn’t warrant a full or part time book-keeper so this falls on Baljit to make sure that they are fully compliant with HMRC and that staff and suppliers get paid on time. Anything that would make her life easier in this respect would be welcome. She is web-savvy so online software is no problem, especially if the features enable her to be more efficient and give her some of her evenings back. What she is really after is someone taking a proactive interest in her accountancy affairs and providing her with advice and insight on her business. She's happy to make decisions but doesn’t have the time to be trawling through lots of reports and numbers, so a simple set of monthly reports and an email with key pointers and reminders would be great. And of course, margins are tight, so if there is a saving in here it would be very welcome.
Baljit could just as easily be the owner or MD of any other small business with a turnover of around £100k - £350k, a handful of full and part time staff and an often chaotic and 'hands-to-the-pump' working environment.
